As a social enterprise, HCT Group reinvests the profits it makes from transport contracts back into high social impact transport services or projects in the communities we serve, and into providing training opportunities for people who are long-term unemployed – making a real difference to people’s lives. The annual social impact report sets out what this reinvestment has enabled and the difference we have made in the communities where we operate over the past financial year.

In 2011/12, HCT Group provided a total of 296,829 passenger trips for disadvantaged individuals or community group members – a 16% increase from the previous financial year. This increase was driven by strong growth in our services to disadvantaged individuals. In 2011/12, we provided 230,213 passenger trips in services for people who find mainstream public transport difficult to use – an increase of 41%.

Our Learning Centre has also made a real difference, with an increase in job outcomes for learners despite funding challenges reducing the total number of learners during the period. The Learning Centre has also redeveloped its offer, putting the pieces in place for large scale increases in learner numbers - from November 2011 to March 2012, the Learning Centre registered 385 new learners starting on programmes that award their qualifications in the forthcoming financial year.

HCT Group has a depot or operation in seven of England’s 15 most deprived boroughs. Consequently, our actions as an economic entity can make a real difference. We prioritise local procurement and in 2011/12, excluding items where local procurement is not practical (fuel, vehicle leasing and insurance) 43% of our spend on suppliers went to areas of economic disadvantage.
